Elite Hockey HQ is the go-to digital hub for competitive hockey players, coaches, and team administrators across North America. But their aging platform couldn't keep pace with user expectations. Key workflows were buried, mobile responsiveness was an afterthought, and essential features like advanced stat tracking and team communication tools simply didn't exist. Higglo Digital partnered with Elite Hockey HQ on an intensive 8-week engagement — redesigning the platform from the ground up, engineering 14 net-new features, and integrating with critical third-party services — to deliver a product that finally matched the caliber of its user base.
The Challenge: A Legacy Platform Failing Elite Athletes
Elite Hockey HQ had built a loyal community of competitive hockey players, coaches, and scouts across North America — but their digital platform wasn't keeping pace. The existing system was riddled with usability issues: a dated interface with no consistent design language, zero mobile optimization, and a complete absence of the team management features that coaches and players needed most.
The consequences were measurable and painful:
38% bounce rate — users were arriving and immediately leaving
2.1-minute average session duration — not enough time to extract real value
12% mobile traffic — a clear sign the platform was unusable on phones and tablets
29% player profile completion — users weren't invested enough to fill out their own profiles
Coach NPS of just +18 — the core power-user segment was dissatisfied
Coaches were managing rosters in spreadsheets. Players were checking stats on third-party sites. Video sharing happened through email chains and external links. The platform that was supposed to be the hub of competitive hockey was being routed around entirely.
The Approach: User-First Discovery, Then Relentless Execution
Higglo Digital kicked off with a week-long discovery sprint. We audited every screen of the legacy platform, documenting 47 distinct usability issues. More importantly, we conducted interviews with 12 coaches and 20 players to understand the real workflows — not the ones the old platform assumed, but the ones that actually happen rink-side, between periods, and during late-night film sessions.
Three strategic principles emerged from discovery:
Hockey-native, not SaaS-generic: The platform needed to look and feel like it was built by people who understand competitive hockey — dark-mode dashboards for rink-side tablet use, data-dense stat views, and terminology that matched the sport.
Mobile-first, everywhere: Coaches adjust lines on tablets. Players check schedules on phones. Every feature had to work flawlessly on every screen size.
Integrate, don't isolate: Rather than forcing users to leave the platform for video, payments, or messaging, we'd bring those capabilities in through robust third-party integrations.
Execution: 11 Features, 3 Integrations, 8 Weeks
With strategy locked, we moved fast. The engagement ran as a single 8-week sprint across three parallel workstreams: User Experience Design, Custom Software Development, and Integration Services.
User Experience Design delivered a ground-up rebuild of the platform's information architecture and visual identity. We created a new dark-mode-first design system, wireframed 9 core screens, and validated every layout through rapid usability testing with real coaches and players. The result was a UI that felt purpose-built for the intensity and speed of competitive hockey.
Custom Software Development was the engine of the engagement. We rebuilt the frontend in React and stood up a new Node.js/PostgreSQL backend capable of supporting the feature density EHHQ needed. Eleven modules shipped:
Real-time roster management with drag-and-drop line editing
Player performance dashboards with season-over-season stat comparisons
Video replay viewer synced to game event timelines
Advanced player search with 14 filterable attributes
Coach communication hub with thread-based messaging
Schedule and calendar management with team-level views
Player comparison tool for side-by-side evaluations
Profile completion gamification to drive richer player data
Every module was engineered for sub-200ms API response times, ensuring the platform felt instant even during high-traffic game nights.
Integration Services connected three critical third-party systems. Stripe powered flexible subscription billing with monthly and annual plans across coach and team tiers. Twilio enabled SMS notifications and direct coach-player messaging. A video hosting API allowed coaches to upload, tag, and share game film without ever leaving the platform. Each integration was wrapped in a resilient service layer with retry logic, webhook handling, and detailed error logging.
Our QA lead ran 320+ test cases across functional, integration, regression, and cross-browser testing — resolving 41 bugs before a single real user touched the new platform. We deployed to production on AWS with zero downtime, achieving 99.95% uptime in the first 30 days.
Outcomes: A Platform That Elite Hockey Deserves
The results arrived fast and held steady:
+214% daily active users within 30 days of launch
Bounce rate dropped from 38% to 14% — users were staying and engaging
Average session duration tripled from 2.1 minutes to 7.4 minutes
Mobile traffic share surged from 12% to 61% — confirming the massive unmet demand for a mobile-first experience
Player profile completion jumped from 29% to 74% — gamification and a better UX made users want to invest in their profiles
Coach NPS improved from +18 to +67 — the power users who matter most became genuine advocates
Elite Hockey HQ now operates the platform their community always deserved — a fast, modern, feature-rich digital hub where players track performance, coaches manage rosters in real time, and the entire competitive hockey ecosystem connects in one place. What was once a liability became a genuine competitive advantage, delivered in just eight weeks.
